Picking Up the Pieces: A Collage Exhibition

“Picking Up the Pieces”

Opening Reception: August 14, 2021 from 5pm – 7:30pm

On view from August 14-October 2, 2021

The Galleries at the Union is pleased to announce the opening of “Picking Up the Pieces” a group exhibition that will explore the art of collage at a time when we are reconstructing, rearranging, and radically transforming the idea of “normalcy” in the aftermath of a global pandemic.

Co-curated by Galleries at the Union Curator Krystal Grow and local collage-based artist Charles Wilkin and featuring work by Wilkin, Brittany M. Reid, Jocelyn Chase, Barbara Winfield, Fred Free, Tamar Cohen, James Gallagher, and John Gall, “Picking Up the Pieces” will showcase the often-underrated art of collage and its unique ability to transform ordinary objects and images into entirely new and surprising compositions. As we stitch together a new version of life-as-usual, collage can inspire us to construct new ideas, make sense of old ones, and acknowledge how frequently they coexist.

Historically, collage has emerged as a medium capable of confronting great cultural, political, and social change. From the iconic photomontages of Alexander Rodchenko during the Russian Revolution to the Xerox machines and zine culture of the 1990’s, the cut-and-paste aesthetic has always had a confrontational edge – one that can help us confront the uncertainty that lies ahead, and find joy in the unexpected.

An exhibition opening will be held on August 14, 2021 from 5pm-7:30pm at the Narrowsburg Union, 7 Erie Avenue, Narrowsburg, NY. 12764.

Advanced sign-ups will not be required for the opening. Visit https://www.narrowsburgunion.com/events for details.
